The price gap explained

Why is a hair transplant in Turkey so much cheaper than in the UK?

The difference is not in the quality of the medical work, but in the economics and the huge advantages of the location.

The Elithair hair transplant clinic in Istanbul
Overheads

Dramatically lower overheads

Running costs are a decisive factor. Clinic space in a major UK city such as London can cost £13,000 to £26,000 a month in rent. In Istanbul, property prices and operating costs are significantly lower.

There is a similar gap on staffing: a specialist hair surgeon in the UK earns on average £8,500 to £13,000 a month. In Turkey, the cost of living and labour costs are lower.

  • A far lower final price, with the same consistently high quality.

Economies of scale

Specialisation drives efficiency

In the UK, hair transplants are just a sideline for many cosmetic surgeons, one of many aesthetic procedures they offer. High fixed costs are spread across very few patients.

Elithair, by contrast, is built on absolute high-volume specialisation, focusing exclusively on hair transplants. That single-minded focus, and the exceptionally efficient organisation it allows, creates enormous economies of scale. Optimal capacity and finely tuned clinical processes bring the fixed cost per patient down dramatically. It is a measurable economic advantage, and one we pass on to our patients pound for pound.

Medical tourism in Turkey: modern treatment room at the Elit clinic
State support

State support for medical tourism

The Turkish government actively supports medical tourism through subsidies and tax incentives for accredited clinics.

This lets Elithair invest in the latest technology without passing the full cost on to patients. UK clinics carry a heavy tax burden, while Istanbul benefits from a specialised economic ecosystem.

  • The highest medical standards at a price well below the European average.

The DHI method

The DHI method: premium standard at no extra cost

Many UK clinics charge a surcharge of up to £2,150 for the DHI method. At Elithair this premium technique is included as standard, with no complicated upgrade tiers.

Our transparent fixed-price model covers the precise work with CHOI implanter pens, the entire hotel stay, all VIP transfers and a supporting PRP treatment.

Because the DHI technique implants the grafts directly without opening channels beforehand, you benefit from higher hair density and noticeably faster healing. For us this quality is not an optional luxury, it is the basis for every perfect result.

How pricing works

How is the cost of a hair transplant calculated?

Understand how pricing works before you compare quotes.

Compare quotes and you quickly run into big price differences. To make the right choice, it pays to understand the logic behind the pricing.

In the UK and many European countries, pricing is usually based on the number of grafts needed (follicular units). A graft contains on average 2 to 3 individual hairs.

The simple formula is: number of grafts × price per graft = total cost. But be careful: the headline “price per graft” is often only half the story. There are two completely different ways of charging.

United Kingdom · Per Graft

Charged per graft

£6,500 – £13,000Example: 3,000 grafts
  • Price per graft: £2.20 to £4.30
  • Base price covers only the surgeon’s fee for extraction and implantation
  • Hotel, aftercare and PRP therapy are usually billed separately
  • Specialist techniques such as DHI push the price up further

What is a graft

The secret of natural density: grafts & digital precision

The quality of a hair transplant is not decided by the sheer number of hairs, but by the precise distribution of the grafts (natural clusters of hair roots) and an exact upfront analysis.

Before the procedure, Elithair’s exclusive Pre-Test System digitally analyses your scalp and fine-tunes every decisive factor to work together perfectly:

  • Graft count: we determine precisely how many single and multi grafts are needed.
  • Single grafts (1 hair): used for a delicate, natural hairline that perfectly recreates the fine transition at the front.
  • Multi grafts (2–4 hairs): provide the volume and maximum density needed across the thinning crown.
  • Implantation angle: calculates the exact, natural growth direction so the new and existing hairs blend together seamlessly.
  • Optimal implantation depth: identifies the ideal tissue depth to guarantee the highest possible survival rate of the implanted roots.

The result: a hair design that does not look “done”, but as natural as if it had always been there.

Method comparison

FUE, Sapphire or DHI: why comparing prices by method is misleading

Many clinics advertise cheap prices per “method”. That is misleading. FUE is not a method you choose, it is the extraction of the hair roots, and it is used in every modern hair transplant. What decides the quality is the implantation: Sapphire or DHI. Elithair uses DHI exclusively, the highest-quality technique, and never charges it as an add-on.

TechniquePhaseWhat it involvesAt Elithair
FUEExtractionIndividual grafts are removed with a micro hollow needle. Identical in every modern procedure.✓ Included, always
SapphireImplantationChannels are pre-cut with a sapphire blade, then the grafts are placed. An older standard technique with lower density and less control over the exit angle. Not offered, an outdated method
DHIImplantationDirect implantation with the Choi pen, no pre-cutting. Highest density, more precise growth direction, a more natural result.✓ Included, premium standard in the fixed price

At many clinics DHI costs a surcharge of £700 to £1,750. At Elithair, DHI is always included in the all-inclusive fixed price from £2,899.

Before and after comparison of a receding hairline hair transplant
Receding hairline

Receding hairline: hair transplant cost

1,000 – 2,500 grafts | from £2,899

A receding hairline is one of the most common reasons men have a hair transplant. When the temples recede and the forehead starts to look wider, for many this is the first major change to their appearance. On the Norwood scale this stage usually corresponds to grade 2 to 3, the ideal point to correct the progression cosmetically.

To restore natural fullness at the temples, around 1,000 to 2,500 grafts are needed depending on the severity. That means we transplant between 3,000 and 5,500 individual hairs and create a hairline that looks exactly as it once did.

  • Norwood grade 2 to 3
  • 1,000 to 2,500 grafts, 3,000 to 5,500 hairs
  • At Elithair from £2,899 all-inclusive
  • In the UK typically £5,100 to £6,900
Crown hair transplant before and after at Elithair
Crown & vertex

Crown & vertex: hair transplant cost

2,500 – 4,000 grafts | from £2,999

The area around the whorl at the back of the head, known medically as the crown or vertex, is a common treatment area. Hair loss here often goes unnoticed for a long time, as it is hard to see in the mirror, until a photo or a comment from someone reveals the thinning patch.

Rebuilding the crown is complex because the hair here grows in a spiral pattern. Because of the density required, it usually needs a higher volume of follicles, typically 2,500 to 4,000 grafts.

At Elithair this treatment costs from £2,999 all-inclusive. In the UK you would pay on average between £6,400 and £10,100.

Full crown hair transplant before and after with 4,000 grafts
Full crown

Full crown: hair transplant cost

4,000 – 5,500 grafts | from £3,299

At Norwood grades 5 to 6, hair loss is already well advanced and affects the area from the hairline to the whorl (vertex). To restore natural density, we carry out a comprehensive hair transplant of 4,000 to 5,500 grafts in a single session.

Success depends largely on how healthy the grafts remain. That is why Elithair uses a highly efficient system: two specialist teams work in parallel. While one team extracts the grafts, the second team prepares the implantation.

Despite the latest technology, we offer you a significant cost advantage over treatment in the UK. At Elithair the cost starts from £3,299, whereas in the UK it usually falls between £10,100 and £12,700.

Beard transplant before and after with 3,700 grafts at Elithair
Beard transplant cost

Beard transplant: 1,500 – 3,000 grafts, from £2,899

A beard transplant permanently fills gaps or scars using your own hair from the back of the head. For a natural result, the shallow growth angle of 10 to 15 degrees is crucial.

The DHI method with the Choi pen delivers the precision needed so the hairs do not stick out unnaturally.

The procedure takes around five hours and produces beard hair that grows for life and is cared for as normal. The all-inclusive package starts at £2,899.

Women's hair transplant before and after
Women’s hair transplant

Women’s hair transplant: 1,500 – 3,500 grafts, from £2,899

Hair loss in women is usually diffuse: a widening parting and thinner hair on top.

Because the grafts have to be placed precisely between the existing hairs, the DHI method is the perfect technique here. Hair loss is far from a men-only issue: more than 15% of the over 150,000 patients at Elithair are women.

Prices for the all-inclusive packages are the same regardless of gender and start at £2,899.

All-inclusive concept

What is included in the price?

With a hair transplant in Turkey, it is not just the price that matters but what you get for it. Many providers tempt you with low prices that turn out to be basic packages where every important service costs extra. Elithair takes a fair, all-inclusive approach. The modern DHI technique (Direct Hair Implantation) is always included with us, while other clinics charge high surcharges for it.

Durability & ongoing costs

How long does a hair transplant last?

The short answer: a lifetime. The longer answer is below.

A permanent result

Transplanted hair does not fall out again

The follicles come from the “donor safe zone” at the back of the head, an area that is genetically resistant to DHT, the hormone that drives hair loss. Every follicle keeps that property even after transplantation. The hair stays, for good.

One point we are upfront about: your non-transplanted hair can carry on thinning. The procedure does not stop hair loss, it offsets it. That is why Elithair recommends supporting measures.

£0
ongoing costs. The result lasts a lifetime.
  • No top-ups, no maintenance, no subscription costs.
  • Wash, cut, colour and style it like normal hair.
  • Genetically DHT-resistant follicles from the donor safe zone.

Possible ongoing costs at a glance

💉

PRP treatment (optional)

£130 to £260 / session. A treatment using your own blood that strengthens the hair roots. 2 to 4 sessions a year are recommended. The first session is included in the all-inclusive package. Follow-up sessions are available in Istanbul.

💊

Medication (optional)

approx. £30 / month. Finasteride (~£18/month) blocks DHT. Minoxidil (~£12/month) improves circulation. Both slow further hair loss, but are prescription only.

🔁

Second transplant (optional)

from £2,899 (after 5 to 10 years). If natural hair loss progresses in the surrounding areas. Fewer grafts are needed than the first time. A free hair analysis will tell you whether it makes sense.

10-year cost overview

Method One-off / annual cost Total over 10 years Result
Elithair hair transplant £2,899 – £3,399 £2,899 – £3,399 Permanent, real hair growth with no ongoing costs.
Hair system (toupee) £2,150 – £3,440 / year ~£28,000 Instant fullness, but high maintenance and ongoing costs.
Drug therapy approx. £360 / year ~£3,600 Can stop hair loss (with continuous use), but does not restore lost volume.

As a one-off investment, a hair transplant quickly pays for itself against ongoing hair systems, because there are no lifelong subscription costs. While medication merely preserves the status quo, only the surgical procedure fills bald areas permanently with your own regrowing hair. On top of that comes a maintenance-free everyday life with no daily restrictions or regular adjustment appointments. Note: the prices given are guide values and can vary depending on your individual situation and the number of grafts required.

NHS & private cover

Will the NHS or private insurance cover the cost?

NHS

A hair transplant is classed as cosmetic surgery, so for hereditary hair loss it is not available on the NHS.

Clinical exceptions that may, in rare cases, be considered:

  • Severe scarring alopecia after burns or trauma
  • Hair loss following chemotherapy or radiotherapy
  • Scarring hair loss caused by autoimmune conditions
  • Reconstruction after surgery

In these situations your treating consultant can submit an Individual Funding Request (IFR) to your local Integrated Care Board (ICB). Approvals are uncommon, as many ICBs treat hair restoration as a low clinical priority, so it is sensible not to count on NHS funding.

Private health insurance

Private medical policies from insurers such as Bupa, AXA Health and Aviva exclude elective cosmetic procedures as standard, so a hair transplant for hereditary hair loss is not covered. Cover applies only to medically necessary reconstruction, for example after cancer surgery or trauma, and depends on the specific terms of your policy. As an elective cosmetic treatment, a hair transplant is also not tax-deductible in the UK.

Why Turkey costs less

Why is Turkey cheaper, for the same quality?

Cheaper does not mean worse, it means more efficient. The explanation lies in hard economic facts.

Staffing costs

60 to 70% cheaper. A dermatologist in the UK earns around £7,000 to £11,000 a month. In Turkey it is £2,600 to £4,300, with an identical six years of training plus specialist qualification.

🏢

Rent & running costs

3 to 4 times lower. Clinic space in London: £22 to £35 per m². In Istanbul: £7 to £13 per m². On top of that come lower energy and administration costs.

📈

Volume & routine

500+ clinics in Istanbul. At Elithair the focus is solely on hair transplants, whereas in the UK a clinic often treats just 2 to 3 patients a month. That routine brings more precision and speed.

🔬

Identical equipment

The same manufacturers worldwide. DHI Choi pens, FUE micromotors, PRP centrifuges: all from international manufacturers. Elithair also runs its own research lab for the patented NEO FUE technique.

State support

Tax breaks for clinics. The Turkish government actively promotes medical tourism. Clinics treating international patients benefit from investment incentives and tax advantages.

🌍

Elithair by the numbers

The largest clinic in the world. With over 150,000 patients treated, Elithair brings you an exceptional depth of medical experience. In Istanbul you are looked after in a state-of-the-art clinic complex with more than 250 specialists and over 20 doctors. On top of that, Elithair has eight locations across Germany.

A BMW built in South Africa costs less to produce than one built in Munich. Same brand, same parts, same standards, different production costs. The same applies to hair transplants: cheaper does not mean worse, it means more efficient.

Avoiding cost traps

What to watch out for

The most common tricks used by dubious clinics, and how Elithair does it differently.

Technicians instead of doctors

At budget clinics under £1,300, trained-up technicians often do the implantation instead of doctors. It is illegal in Turkey, but it still happens. Ask directly: who carries out the implantation?

Manipulated graft counts

“£1 per graft” sounds fair. Then multi-follicle grafts (1 graft = 3 hairs) are counted as 3 grafts. So 2,000 real grafts become 4,000 on the invoice. At Elithair, fixed prices apply.

Bait and switch

The advertised price only covers basic FUE. On the day, you are told DHI is better, with a surcharge of £700 to £1,300. That is not an upgrade, it is pressure selling.

Zero aftercare

After the procedure: left to fend for yourself. No app, no follow-up, no point of contact. Elithair: 365 days of app-based support and a dedicated patient care team you can reach any time.

Exaggerated graft promises

7,000+ grafts in one session? Medically risky. Above 5,500 grafts the donor area is overstretched, leading to visible scarring and a lower survival rate. Reputable clinics cap each session at 5,000 to 5,500 grafts.

Opaque pricing

Flat prices with no individual hair analysis, DHI/FUE as a paid upgrade rather than standard, no genuine before and after photos, no verified reviews. Always ask exactly what is included in the price, and check Google and Trustpilot reviews independently.

Country comparison 2026

Hair transplant cost: country comparison 2026

Hair transplant costs vary enormously around the world in 2026, because European countries tend to charge per graft while Turkey relies on patient-friendly all-inclusive packages. A procedure in the UK can quickly run from £8,000 to over £12,000, whereas leading clinics such as Elithair in Istanbul offer the modern DHI method including hotel and transfer from just £2,899.

Country Average price per graft
United Kingdom£8,000 – £12,000£2.20 – £4.30
Switzerland£6,900 – £17,200£2.60 – £6.00
Ireland£4,300 – £10,300£1.70 – £3.90
Hungary£2,600 – £5,150£1.30 – £2.60
Poland£2,600 – £4,300£1.30 – £2.15
Elithair Istanbul£2,899 – £3,399all-inclusive

Hungary & Poland: prices sit between Turkey and the UK, but with far less specialisation: 20 to 30 clinics rather than 500+. No patented NEO FUE, no Pre-Test Systems.

Switzerland: the most expensive in the world. Many Swiss patients travel specifically to Istanbul. A saving of £8,500+ more than justifies the flight.

Ireland: a little below the UK, but few specialist clinics. Direct flights to Istanbul from Dublin make the trip easy.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about hair transplant costs in Turkey

What does a hair transplant cost?

At Elithair, from £2,899 all-inclusive: with DHI, a luxury hotel (2 nights), VIP transfer, PRP, patented NEO FUE, Sleep-Deep sedation, medication and 365 days of app aftercare. In the UK: £8,000 – £12,000, often without hotel or PRP. Elithair pricing tiers: up to 2,000 grafts £2,899, up to 2,500 grafts £2,999, up to 3,000 grafts £3,099, up to 4,000 grafts £3,299, 5,000+ grafts £3,399. Not included: your flight (approx. £90 – £220).

How many grafts do I need?

The number of grafts depends on the area being treated and the extent of the hair loss. Typical ranges: receding hairline 1,500–2,500 grafts, crown/vertex 2,500–4,000 grafts, full crown 4,000–5,500 grafts, beard transplant 1,000–3,000 grafts. For context: a graft contains 1 to 4 individual hairs, on average about 2.2. So 3,000 grafts means roughly 6,600 individual hairs are transplanted. At Elithair the exact number is determined by the Pre-Test System: 6 analyses that establish the quality of the donor area, the hair density and your individual treatment plan. This analysis is free and comes with no obligation.

What is included in the all-inclusive package?

Everything is included, no extras: DHI (a surcharge of £700 – £1,750 elsewhere), 2 nights in a luxury hotel, VIP transfer, PRP treatment, medication and care pack, patented NEO FUE technique, Sleep-Deep sedation, the Pre-Test System (6 analyses) and 365 days of app aftercare. The only additional cost: your flight (from approx. £90).

Are prices different for men and women?

No, at Elithair the prices for men and women are identical. The cost depends solely on the number of grafts needed. Women typically need 1,500–3,500 grafts, as their hair loss is usually diffuse rather than in defined areas. The technique is more demanding, because the grafts have to be placed between existing hairs without damaging them. The price stays the same, though. Women make up around 15% of all patients at Elithair, and the team has extensive experience with female hair loss.

Why is Elithair cheaper than the UK?

The price difference comes down to three factors. First, staffing and running costs in Turkey are 60–70% lower than in the UK, with identical medical training. Second, Istanbul benefits from the highest concentration of specialists in the world: over 500 clinics, decades of experience and state support for medical tourism. Third, Elithair operates at enormous volume: over 150,000 patients, 250+ staff and its own 68-room hotel. That volume cuts the cost per patient considerably. The equipment is identical to UK clinics: the same DHI Choi pens, the same FUE micromotors, the same PRP centrifuges, all from international manufacturers. Cheaper here does not mean worse, it means more efficient.

Will the NHS or insurance cover the cost?

The NHS classes hair transplants as cosmetic surgery and does not cover the cost for hereditary hair loss. In rare clinical cases, such as severe scarring after burns or trauma, your treating consultant can submit an Individual Funding Request (IFR) to your local Integrated Care Board (ICB), though approvals are uncommon as many ICBs treat this as a low clinical priority. Private medical insurers such as Bupa, AXA Health and Aviva exclude elective cosmetic procedures as standard, so cover applies only to medically necessary reconstruction (for example after cancer surgery or trauma) and depends on your policy terms. As an elective cosmetic treatment, a hair transplant is not tax-deductible in the UK. If in doubt, speak to your insurer before treatment.

Are the costs tax-deductible?

No. The UK has no equivalent to schemes that let private individuals offset medical or cosmetic treatment against income tax, and HMRC does not allow private healthcare costs to be deducted. A hair transplant for hereditary hair loss is treated as an elective cosmetic procedure, so you should plan on funding the cost yourself. If a treatment is genuinely medically necessary, for example reconstruction after an accident, burns or surgery, it is worth keeping all your records and seeking professional advice, but for a standard cosmetic hair transplant there is no tax relief available.

How long does the transplanted hair last?

Transplanted hair lasts permanently, for life. The follicles come from the so-called “donor safe zone” at the back of the head, which is genetically resistant to the hormone DHT (dihydrotestosterone). The follicles keep that property even after transplantation, so they do not fall out again. Unlike medication such as Finasteride or Minoxidil, which only work while you keep taking them, the result of a transplant is permanent. The transplanted hair grows naturally and can be cut, coloured and styled. To protect your non-transplanted hair over the long term, Elithair recommends supporting PRP treatments and, where appropriate, drug therapy.

What does a second hair transplant cost?

A second hair transplant follows the same pricing structure as the first. In practice fewer grafts are usually needed, because only certain areas are being topped up, typically 1,000 to 2,500 grafts. That puts the cost at Elithair at around £2,899 to £2,999 all-inclusive. A second procedure mainly comes into play when natural hair loss has progressed in the surrounding areas after 5 to 10 years, or when a patient wants to increase the density in particular zones further. The key factor is having enough donor hair at the back of the head, which is checked with another free hair analysis.

What does a beard transplant cost?

A beard transplant at Elithair starts from £2,899 all-inclusive. Depending on the result you want, 1,000 to 3,000 grafts are transplanted from the back of the head into the beard area. The hair grows there permanently and behaves like normal beard growth: it can be shaved, trimmed and styled. The DHI method is particularly well suited to beard transplants, because beard hairs have to be implanted at a very shallow angle (10–15 degrees) to look natural. The procedure takes 3 to 5 hours. First results show after about 4 months, the full result after 12 months. As always, the all-inclusive package covers hotel, transfer, PRP and aftercare.

Are there any hidden costs at Elithair?

The all-inclusive package covers: the DHI method, a luxury hotel (2 nights), VIP airport transfer, PRP treatment, medication and care pack, patented NEO FUE technique, Sleep-Deep sedation, the Pre-Test System with 6 analyses and the Elithair app for 365 days of aftercare. The only thing not included is your flight to Istanbul (approx. £90–£220). There is no DHI surcharge, no hotel surcharge and no medication fee.

What happens if the transplant does not take?

Thanks to the patented NEO FUE technique, the survival rate at Elithair is boosted to as high as 98%. For comparison, the industry standard is 85 to 90%. A complete failure to take is extremely rare when the procedure is carried out properly, and our 20-year guarantee would apply in such a case. What unsettles many patients is so-called “shock loss”: temporary hair shedding in weeks 2 to 6 after the procedure. This is completely normal and affects both transplanted and existing hairs in the treated zone. The roots are in a resting phase and start growing again from month 3 to 4. The full final result shows after 12 months. The Elithair app guides you through the whole process with daily updates, and the medical team stays available throughout your recovery.

What happens on the day of the procedure?

The treatment day at Elithair follows a clear routine. In the morning you are collected from your hotel and taken to the clinic. First you go through the Pre-Test System with 6 analyses (blood test, scalp analysis, donor-area assessment, hair-density measurement, skin-elasticity test, hair-structure analysis). You then plan the new hairline together with the doctor, seeing in advance exactly how the result will look. Sleep-Deep sedation follows, then extraction of the grafts from the donor area (the back of the head) begins. The grafts are kept in the patented NEO FUE nutrient solution and implanted with the DHI Choi pen. The whole procedure takes 4 to 8 hours depending on the number of grafts. At the end you receive all your aftercare instructions, your care pack and access to the Elithair app. Then it is back to the hotel.

Can I fly home straight after the procedure?

Yes, most patients fly home 1 to 2 days after the treatment. There is no medical concern: the cabin pressure in modern aircraft has no negative effect on the transplanted grafts. Elithair puts together a travel care pack containing everything you need for the first few days: a special shampoo, spray, medication and a sleep cap to protect the treated zone. The day after the procedure there is a check-up at the clinic, where the first wash is carried out and correct healing is confirmed. After that you can fly home with peace of mind. From the moment you get back, the Elithair app takes over your daily care: 365 days of specific instructions, reminders and the option to send photos to the medical team at any time.
