Researchers are investigating so-called biocompatible materials\u2014such as special&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/topics\/engineering\/bioplastics\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">bioplastics<\/a>&nbsp;that are well-tolerated by the body. The goal is to design these artificial structures so that they:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Appear as natural as possible<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Are not rejected by the body<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Represent a permanent solution for severe hair loss.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>In contrast to autologous hair transplantation, in which real hair roots are transplanted, these are non-living implants \u2013 similar to medical synthetic fibers or implants from other areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-current-state-of-research\">The Current State of Research<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"750\" height=\"500\" src=\"https:\/\/elithair.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2025\/07\/scientist-digital-overview.webp\" alt=\"A female scientist reviews a digital overview of the human body on a large screen.\" class=\"wp-image-91562\" srcset=\"https:\/\/elithair.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2025\/07\/scientist-digital-overview.webp 750w, https:\/\/elithair.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2025\/07\/scientist-digital-overview-300x200.webp 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Much international research on bioplastics is already underway, and some has touched upon the possibility of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.helmholtz-hips.de\/en\/news-events\/news\/detail\/news\/hair-follicle-models-from-the-3d-printer\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">3D-printing hair follicles<\/a> and using <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41598-023-44905-x\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the keratin of real hair in the production of bioplastics<\/a>. In theory, with biological material as its basis, certain bioplastics could be well-accepted by the body.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You might already be aware that <a href=\"https:\/\/elithair.com\/uk\/blog\/artificial-hair-transplants-are-they-still-performed\/\">synthetic hair transplants<\/a>, which do not require bioplastics, are currently an option available to patients. In these procedures, fiber-like synthetic hairs are implanted directly into the scalp using microneedles. This option is, however, typically reserved for those whose hair loss is so extensive that there is insufficient donor hair available for transplantation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the meantime, more research on the implantation of artificial hair follicles, specifically, is needed. To date, it cannot be ascertained whether such implants could be tolerated long-term by the body, if they would cause inflammatory reactions, how durable the bioplastic can or should be, or if any speculative procedures could result in a natural appearance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-promising-at-a-glance\">Promising at a Glance<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>On paper, the idea sounds promising\u2014especially for people whose hair loss is so extensive that there is no longer sufficient donor hair for extraction. Synthetic hair implants:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>do not grow with the hair \u2013 that means: no change in length, no styling possible<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>do not respond to the natural&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/elithair.com\/uk\/blog\/hair-growth-cycle\/\">hair cycle<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>often appear less authentic upon closer inspection<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>carry a higher risk of infection or rejection reactions<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>What is particularly of note is that the body can recognise the implants as foreign material, and even with biodegradable plastics, encapsulation, inflammation or permanent irritation can occur.
